Overview

Every conversation in Loop is automatically persisted as a session. Sessions support branching, forking, resuming, full-text search, and export — giving you a complete history of every interaction.

Storage Backends

Loop supports three session storage backends:

Resume a Session

From the Command Line

Interactive Picker

In the TUI, type:
This opens a picker showing your recent sessions with names, timestamps, and preview snippets.

Session Tree

Sessions in Loop form a tree structure. Every fork creates a branch, and you can navigate between branches freely.

Fork a Session

This shows your conversation history and lets you pick a message to fork from. The fork creates a new branch while preserving the original.
Opens the session tree navigator. Browse branches, switch between forks, and see the full history. You can also double-tap Escape for quick tree access (configurable via doubleEscapeAction in settings).

Clone a Session

Duplicates the current session into a new, independent copy.

Session Info

View detailed information about the current session:
This displays:
  • Session ID and name
  • Token usage (input, output, cache reads/writes)
  • Estimated cost
  • Cache waste metrics
  • Message count

Name Your Sessions

Give sessions meaningful names for easier identification in the resume picker.

Export and Import

Export

Import

With the SQLite backend, all session content is indexed for full-text search. Use the resume picker to search across all your past sessions by keyword.

Compaction

When a conversation grows long, Loop automatically compacts the context to stay within the model’s context window. See Compaction for details.

Start Fresh

Starts a new session without closing the current one.
